What is a domain name?
A domain name is a unique address by which one website is identified from another. Each website also has a
unique IP (internet protocol) address. Even though the domain and the IP address are interchangeable, the domain
name is the most common form of reaching a website address.
Example of a domain name: yoursite.com
Example of an IP address: 72.14.207.99 (The IP address for Google) |
Do I need a domain name?
In the strictest sense of "need", no you don't "need" a domain name but it is certainly easier for your friends
and customers to remember than a series of numbers and dots. |
How do I register a domain name?
First you need to find a domain name that suits your website but hasn't been registered by someone else. There is
one large database of all registered domain names to make sure that each one is unique. We use GoDaddy.com to register
all of our domains so we suggest their search engine as the easiest place to look for your desired domain name.
On their home page they have a search box for you to use to see if your domain is available. If it is available, there
are many websites you can visit to actually register the domain. Prices and time periods will vary so it's best to
do a little research before committing. As one of our services, we are happy to help you through the registration process
in a way that makes sure that you retain complete ownership of your domain. |
